The EPA’s Lead Abatement Supervisor Initial Training is a 4-day (32-hour) course for professionals who plan and oversee lead-based paint abatement projects. This in-person course includes hands-on training and provides instruction on the health hazards of lead exposure, applicable laws and regulations, identifying and controlling lead-based paint hazards, work site set up, and safe abatement, cleanup and disposal methods. Additional topics specific to supervisors include inspection/risk assessment report interpretation, supervisory roles and responsibilities, project management, and recordkeeping. For the purpose of this training, abatement is defined as any set of measures designed to permanently eliminate lead-based paint hazards. Certified Abatement Firms are required to have a Certified Lead Abatement Supervisor on-site to manage projects, prepare occupant protection plans and abatement reports, and direct certified Lead Abatement Workers. This course concludes with the required Lead Abatement Supervisor course certification exam. Upon successful completion, participants will receive an Interim course completion certificate, allowing them to work for up to six months as a Lead Abatement Supervisor while completing the U.S. EPA online application process and third-party exam required to receive a full three-year EPA certification.
Note: To become certified by the U.S. EPA as a Supervisor an individual must have one year of experience as a certified lead-based paint abatement worker; or at least 2 years of experience in a related field (e.g., lead, asbestos, or environmental remediation work) or in the building trades (per 40 CFR 745.226(b)).
