New York is home to five species of ticks: the blacklegged (deer) tick, American dog tick, lone star tick, Gulf Coast tick, and the newest species identified as the Asian longhorned tick, which has been found in the Hudson Valley. All of these tick species can carry diseases that affect humans. The Asian longhorned tick, however, presents an additional concern because it can also have a significant impact on the health of livestock.
